About the studio
Art Works Downtown is a nonprofit arts center founded in 1996 in a historic building on Fourth Street in San Rafael, with four galleries, 33 artist studios, a jewelers' guild, a frame shop and the Ceramic Art Center of Marin. Artists apply to rent studios, and the center offers the Max Thelen Studio Residency and an artist membership that makes members eligible to exhibit. The public visits the galleries and open studios, especially during the free 2nd Friday Art Walk.
